About Essen
With a population of approximately 580,000 people, Essen made it into the top ten of Germany’s largest cities. In 2001 the formerly world’s largest colliery “Zeche Zollverein” had been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located on the River Ruhr and placed in the middle of the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Area), Essen and the Ruhr metropolitan area have been chosen to become the European Capital of Culture 2010.

A huge range of different artistic and cultural events throughout the whole year help driving the Ruhrgebiet into a poly-centric and dynamic metropolis.
Over the past years Essen has turned into a great tourist region and offers its visitors a lot of attractions in all areas of life, such as: museums, opera houses, art exhibitions, parks and malls, recreational areas and industrial heritage.

Essen is only a few kilometers away from Düsseldorf International Airport and can be easily reached by car and train. The airports Cologne/Bonn, Weeze and Münster/Osnabrück can also be easily reached within an one-hour-drive.
